The Burnet tree planting originally scheduled for September 22 is back on track, and will take place Saturday, November 10, from 9 AM to noon. We’ll meet at the northeast corner of Burnet at Ohlen, in the Shu Shu’s parking lot. We’re also planning Saturday Dec 1 as a fall-back date in case of rain or if we don’t finish on 11/10.
The project was delayed because we were required to follow an onerous process for getting a license agreement from the City of Austin Transportation Department to plant the trees. Fortunately, everyone at the City of Austin seemed to understand the need to streamline the red tape. Chris Riley’s office accelerated the conversation, so that we will be able to plant 35 more trees this autumn as originally intended. We planted 20 trees at McCallum HS and N Lamar Blvd on October 13 at sites owned by AISD and TxDOT.
With the November planting, we will have planted over 100 trees in just 2 1/2 years, which was our original goal for five years. Of course, now we have to keep these trees watered and cared for while they get established in challenging side-of-the-road conditions. But we have a proven track-record now and look forward to building upon it. Thanks to everyone who has helped with this Burnet forestry project to date, and to everybody who can help again on November 10!
