Hosted by the Lamar Middle School Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Committee
When: Tuesday January 11, 2011 at 6:00-7:30pm
Where: Lamar Middle School cafeteria, 6201 Wynona Ave
The City of Austin will perform their scheduled “resurfacing” of Wynona Avenue in 2011 and “reconstruction” of White Rock Drive in 2012. Resurfacing involves a shallow scraping of asphalt and adding a new layer of asphalt. Reconstruction involves scraping all the layers of the roadway down to the dirt and then rebuilding the roadway. The Lamar Middle School Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Committee has identified the upcoming resurfacing and reconstruction as opportunities to improve the form and function of those streets. The City of Austin has indicated they are open to ideas. Therefore at this meeting attendees will:
- Identify the current problems (transportation, drainage, safety, curb & gutter, etc) with Wynona Avenue and White Rock Drive.
- Develop goals for the redesign of Wynona Avenue and White Rock Drive.
- Brainstorm new street designs for Wynona Avenue and White Rock Drive.
The resulting brainstormed plans will be presented to the City of Austin staff for their preliminary review and cost estimation. Another meeting with neighborhood residents will then be held to present the City response to the different plans and to discuss next steps.
